PROJECT OVERVIEW
From October 2024 to July 2025, Naturenv Consult conducted an ESIA for a mixed-use infrastructure development project located at Area 43 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The project encompassed the construction of a multi-storey shopping mall covering 5,000 m² of floor space, and a hotel with 100 guest rooms and apartments. The project aimed to enhance regional trade and tourism while creating income opportunities for the proponent, Royal Properties.

THE CHALLENGE
The project required an ESIA to ensure compliance with national legislation and regulatory frameworks while promoting sustainability and minimizing potential environmental and social impacts. Close collaboration with architects and engineers was also essential to integrate green design principles. However, the proponent faced budget constraints for the study.

OUR APPROACH
To conduct the ESIA efficiently and cost-effectively, Naturenv Consult focused on key environmental and social issues through scoping and targeted detailed analysis. Existing data and GIS information were leveraged to reduce field costs, while a lean, experienced team carried out fieldwork and consultations simultaneously. Close collaboration with architects and engineers enabled the integration of practical green design solutions, ensuring alignment with regulatory and sustainability standards. This strategic approach delivered a high-quality, compliant ESIA within limited resources.
